“Don’t Choose Extinction” is the title of a film sponsored by the UN development agency in which a dinosaur reveals to the world the contradiction of subsidizing the same fossil fuels that are not bringing us to the brink of extinction . The Spanish version features the voice of Mexican actress Eiza González.
To raise awareness about this problem, this UN agency has released a video featuring a dinosaur that, from the General Assembly podium , urges world leaders to abandon fossil fuel subsidies and “not choose extinction.”
The study adds that these subsidies cancel out significant advances to end climate change and drive inequality to benefit people with more resources.
According to research available on the campaign website (dontchooexictinction.com), annually $ 423 billion is spent annually to subsidize fossil fuels for consumers : oil, electricity generated by burning other fossil fuels, gas and coal.
This amount is four times higher than what is being asked to help poor countries cope with the climate crisis and could cover the cost of all COVID-19 vaccines for every person in the world, or pay three times the annual amount needed to eradicate extreme poverty worldwide.
On the other hand, the analysis of the Program highlights that these funds, which are paid by all taxpayers, end up deepening inequality and preventing action on climate change .
The report indicates that the main contributor to the climate emergency is the energy sector, which accounts for 73% of man-made greenhouse gas emissions.
Frankie the dinosaur’s message of hope
To raise awareness about this problem and as part of the “Do not choose extinction” campaign, the Program has launched a video starring a dinosaur named Frankie, who highlights the absurdity of paying for our own disappearance.
“With Frankie the dinosaur, we may come up with something a little different, a little attractive and with a great message, which is a message of hope , you know, there is a crisis, we have to act and we have the solutions, we know what to do. and we can do it ”, highlighted the Program’s communications director during the campaign presentation.

Anjali Kwatra explained that the promotional website allows you to read a child-oriented book on climate change and download a tool called Saurus Rex, which explains difficult words and concepts about climate change in everyday language.
In addition, it has a collective intelligence platform, Global Mindpool , where people can access and fill out a survey that will ask them to talk about their opinions, their fears, their hopes, and their solutions to the climate crisis.
The data collected will serve the Program to inform and speak with policy makers or climate change.
The melting of the Greenland ice sheet would lead to an unforeseeable disaster
The famous actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, in charge of the dubbing of Frankie’s video into Danish, highlighted that in his work as a goodwill ambassador for the Program, he was able to witness first-hand the effects of rising temperatures: Coastal erosion in the Maldives, droughts in the Amazon rainforest and retreat of glaciers in Greenland.
“Greenland, which is my wife’s homeland. It is our second home. The largest island in the world, where the rapid melting of the ice sheet is pouring 300,000 million tons of ice into the ocean each year is the main contributor to the rise in sea level, ”he warned.
Coster-Waldau added that “unlike Las Vegas, what happens in Greenland definitely does not stay there. Experts predict that if the Greenland ice sheet melted, the sea level would rise up to 20 feet , with devastating consequences for all life on the planet. “
